About the Role
The role
We are seeking a Senior News Journalist to cover the travel and tourism sector. This role involves news reporting, analysis and writing on key developments affecting the industry with a focus on original, operationally relevant journalism. The successful candidate will contribute to Travel News and Tourism Update respected publications within our portfolio, delivering insightful and authoritative coverage for a professional audience.
Key responsibilities:
Breaking news and analysis: Provide timely, well-researched news stories and features that add value beyond basic reporting.
Interviewing and industry engagement: Build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including executives, policymakers and business leaders, to deliver exclusive insights.
Curiosity and news acumen: Stay ahead of industry trends, identifying hidden angles and breaking news before competitors.
Data interpretation and industry reports: Analyse industry data, market trends and policy developments to produce informed and insightful articles.
Subject matter expertise and authoritativeness: Establish subject matter expertise by identifying key industry issues and ensuring coverage remains authoritative and insightful.
Collaboration and editorial integrity: Work closely with editors and fellow team members to maintain high journalistic standards, ensuring accuracy, clarity and professionalism in all content.
Event and conference coverage: Attend key industry events, conferences and press briefings to provide on-the-ground reporting and develop relationships.
Requirements
Proven journalism experience: At least five years of newsroom or industry reporting experience, with a strong portfolio of published journalism. Experience covering travel, tourism, aviation, or hospitality is advantageous.
Exceptional writing and editing skills: Strong command of written English, with the ability to craft clear, concise and engaging news stories.
Analytical ability: Ability to interpret complex industry information, policy developments and data to produce insightful content.
Networking skills: Proven ability to cultivate sources and build professional relationships.
Curiosity and initiative: An instinct for spotting trends, asking questions, and digging deeper into industry shifts with an insatiable thirst for knowledge.
Deadline-Driven and organised: Ability to manage multiple assignments under tight deadlines without compromising quality.
Autonomy and initiative: Self-starter who can independently pitch, develop and execute high-value stories.
A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle, as travel may be required for industry events and interviews.
